Artist Research

I became aware of the work of Nicolas Folland at the Gallery of SA. I was immediately drawn to the beautiful light installations, it was really cool to see that they were crystal glasses, just like the ones that my mum collects from op shops. I thought that this was a lovely observation of the beauty in everyday objects, light has a really special way of allowing these transformations to occur.

Domestic crystal glassware, woven nylon thread

These are some photos that I took.

The work that I saw was exhibited under the title Departure and the art works explore themes of maritime history, migration and colonial exploration. The way in which this artist creates the surface is really amazing.

Benedict Drew

As I was creating my odd metallic shapes I thought of Benedict Drew, this thought came up when I decided to animate the hanging metallic pom pom. I remembered his exhibition in the SALA gallery that had those
odd Plasticine glomps and bizarre shaped objects. But his work is all in ze digital world, so I can't relate to his work too much really. Just thought I'd include him here.

Andy Goldsworthy

In his own words -
"I enjoy the freedom of just using my hands and "found" tools--a sharp stone, the quill of a feather, thorns. I take the opportunities each day offers: if it is snowing, I work with snow, at leaf-fall it will be with leaves; a blown-over tree becomes a source of twigs and branches. I stop at a place or pick up a material because I feel that there is something to be discovered. Here is where I can learn. "

Goldsworthy's investigations of nature draw on simple observations to create beautiful ephemeral art works. It is through his process of art making that Goldsworthy discovers and understands the natural world.
